Scrap worth Rs15L gutted in fire at Sankhali

Scrap material worth an estimated Rs 15 lakh was damaged in a fire at a godown in Karapur Tisk in Vithalapur-Sankhali in the wee hours of Wednesday. No one was injured in the fire mishap.

The incident took place at about 3.55 am when a fire was noticed at the godown. A fire tender from Bicholim fire station went to the site and on noticing that the flames were spreading rapidly, four other fire tenders were pressed into service from the fire stations at Bicholim, Valpoi and Ponda.

The firefighters battled for several hours before extinguishing the fire and preventing it from spreading to nearby resident houses, a government primary school and Arabic-English tuition classes.

The materials gutted in the fire included scrap utensils, aerosol bottles, corrugated boxes and automobile spare parts. The firefighters have estimated that property worth Rs 15 was gutted in the fire. The cause of the fire is unclear and investigations are in progress.
