Yet again, South Goa ZP members at the meeting held on Wednesday, resolved to prevail upon the government to devolve adequate powers to the Zilla Panchayats failing which they demanded that the ZPs be scrapped.
Going a step further, the ZP members also felt that the strength of number of MLAs in the State Assembly be curtailed while some others felt that this strength must be increased in lieu of scrapping of the ZPs.
Some other ZP members felt that the opinion regarding the reduction/ increase of the MLAs in the State Assembly be kept pending and a final call on this aspect be taken only after meeting the Panchayat Minister.
The discussion chaired by South Goa ZP Chairperson Navnath Naik witnessed ZP members like former South Goa ZP Chairperson Nelly Rodrigues, Deepak Naik Borkar, Jaideep Shirodkar, Krishna Velip, Ulhas Tuenkar placing their views on this matter at the South Goa ZP meeting.
The meeting also resolved to felicitate South Goa ZP members as well as the newly elected panchayat members somewhere in the second week of July and to invite Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar as the chief guest for this function. The ZP members also decided to take this opportunity to urge the panch members to help vigorously launch the ‘Swachh Bharat’ drive as well as to eradicate the garbage menace so as to achieve the aim of a clean State.
The ZP members also resolved to urge the government to set up a Solid Waste Treatment Plant on the lines of Saligao in the South as well, where places like Cacora or Verna industrial estate which have already been shortlisted for this purpose.
Borim ZP member Deepak Naik Borkar demanded that the State government must either repair the old Borim bridge or construct a new one in its place to avoid a Sanvordem like tragedy.
ZP member Jaideep Shirodkar demanded the digging of a well in a part of his constituency for ensuring smooth supply of potable drinking water to the residents. He also wanted the government to construct a fish/ vegetable market, a community hall and a market complex with a public toilet at Shiroda.
The meeting also approved the expenditure statement towards development works and administrative expenses for the months of March, April and May 2017 as well as approval of final accounts for the year 2015-16 and 2016-17.
