A total of 1,522 wards across 186 panchayats have been marked, with the exclusion of Allorna, Chandel-Hassapur, Harvale, Casarwarnem and Taleigao panchayats.
The five year-term of these panchayats concludes on May 27. The state government had first announced the date of polls as June 25 and had later brought it forward to June 17 in due consideration of the Sao Joao festival, which is celebrated on June 24.
The June 11 poll proposal comes close on the heels of Bombay High Court at Goa directed the State Government to hold the panchayat polls on or before June 12. The order was based on the submission of the government that it will complete the delimitation process by May 5 and on the submission of State Election Commission that it will need around one month to prepare the voters’ list.
Speaking to The Goan, Director of Panchayats Sandhya Kamat stated, “The DoP will formally conclude the delimitation and reservation of panchayat wards by Friday. A total of 1,522 wards have been marked. There will be 39 more wards in 16 panchayats,
