A self-defence programme for female youth evoked encouraging response from the youth of Benaulim constituency, prompting MLA Venzy Viegas to announce a self-defense exercise for the students of Std VIII, IX and X for all the seven schools in the constituency.

An initiative of the Benaulim MLA for the youth of the constituency in coordination with the Goa Police,

Venzy said the idea behind the self-defence programme is to ensure that the next generation do not get scared of  anti-social elements.

“This is one of the first initiatives in our constituency, which was part of my manifesto. Women's safety is paramount. We have our children, wives, sisters and parents. We are born out of women. But, there are anti social elements, who will make noise when someone is treated badly. They are involved in a lot of atrocities against women”, he said while addressing the youngsters.

He added: “Because of political misuse, these anti-social elements get away. And, the only way to stop atrocities and rapes is that you guys need to fightback”.

Police inspector Reshma Shirodkar, pointed out that the police is there to help the women. She said the Goa police has been conducting self defense program for young females since 2014, adding that the police has so far trained 700 children in the schools, colleges and mahila mandals.
