Senior citizen escapes unhurt as tree falls on house at Velsao

VASCO

A senior citizen had a lucky escape when a coconut tree fell on a house in Velsao, damaging the roof and other parts of the house on Wednesday.

According to Velsao Panch Jim D’Souza, the incident occurred at the house of Ramakant Gaonkar at around 1:30 pm in Kantem Bellem, Velsao.

“Fortunately, senior citizen Shobhavati Gaonkar, who was in the house during the incident, escaped unhurt. It was a lucky escape for her because the coconut tree fell on a nearby breadfruit tree before crashing onto the house with reduced force. The family had been expressing concerns about the coconut tree for the last few days. Their fears came true when the coconut tree fell on their house,” said D’Souza.

D’Souza mentioned that due to a narrow internal road leading to the house, they had to rely on local tree cutters to clear the tree from the roof.

“The family has now sought permission to have authorities chop down another tree lying precariously near their house, as they fear the tree is weak and could come crashing down. We will get the issue resolved through the Panchayat soon,” said D’Souza.
