CANACONA
In Canacona’s nine member panchayats, wards 3, 7 and 8 are reserved for women, while wards 3 and 4 are reserved for women in the 7-member panchayats.
According to information gathered from the local administration, none of the seven panchayats in Canacona taluka will have new wards. There were expectations of increasing the number of wards in the seven-member Agonda and Shristhal panchayats due to increase in voter strength. Cotigao is another panchayat which also has seven members.
Poinguinim, Loliem-Polem, Gaondongrim and Khola are the four panchayats electing nine members.
Except for women reservations, many prospective candidates willing to contest the panchayat polls are eagerly awaiting government announcement for reservations of SC, ST and OBC categories.
Meanwhile, many contemplating to contest the panchayat polls have already started to make household visits to realise their electoral chances before actually deciding on contesting the polls or not.
Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes, who is addressing corner meetings to thank people for electing him to the Goa Assembly, is also using the meetings to build up panels for the June 11 panchayat polls.
Sources informed that in most corner meetings, Fernandes when approached by probable candidates requesting his support, advised his supporters to build a consensus and get elected, as he does not wish to disturb or hurt any contesting candidates being part of his own supporters.
Fernandes has almost completed his thanksgiving corner meetings at Cotigao, Gaondongrim, Shristhal, Agonda, Poinguinim and also municipal areas and is presently busy convening meetings at his home village Loliem-Polem.
Former Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar is also learnt to be busy, mostly diverting his attention to Gaondongrim and Cotigao villages, besides approaching some frontline local leaders of Agonda and Shristhal. He is also in close contact with probable candidates at Poinguinim and Loliem-Polem, informed sources.
