Several parts of Salcete witnesses power outage, consumers fume

MARGAO
Many parts of Salcete, including Salcete coastal belt witnessed a power outage early Saturday morning, leaving power consumers fuming since the outage comes less than a week after the Power Department had taken a general shutdown last Sunday.

Right from Cuncolim to Cavelossim and Colva, power consumers were caught unawares as they demanded to know why the department did not make prior announcement about a power shut down.

Power officials, however, attributed the situation to power outage, with an official explaining irate consumers that there was some fault at the Cuncolim sub-station as well as at Xeldem.

Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz pointed out that the department ought to have made prior announcement if they had to take an urgent shut down. “There has been no current since shortly after 7 in the morning. There was no power supply for over half an hour. This has put the public and power consumers to inconveniences,” he said.

Social activist Judith Almeida pointed out that while Saturday morning witnessed a major power outage, people of Colva and adjoining village have been facing outages almost every day for reasons best known to the Power Department.

Incidentally, the Cuncolim Civic and Consumer Forum has pointed out that Cuncolim area witnessed around nine power outages on Friday, adding that Cuncolim had no power supply on Saturday morning.

When the Forum questioned power officials over the Saturday outage, officials reportedly attributed the outage to the breakdown at the 220KV Cuncolim sub-station.
