Sewage has been overflowing on the main road at Chimbel at two locations, causing nuisance to motorists and pedestrians alike.

At one location, sewage from a public toilet built by the Sulabh is overflowing on the road at Indira Nagar and in the second place, sewage from a housing society is overflowing on the road near Our Lady of Livra Febres Chapel.

When questioned about both issues, Chimbel Sarpanch Chandrakant Kunkolkar said the toilet at Indira Nagar was built by the Sulabh due to Covid on an emergency basis and it has to be maintained by them.

“The issue is recurring time and again, and we will write to authorities concerned to either ensure its periodic maintenance or shut the toilet down,” said Kunkolkar.

“The capacity of the septic tank is very less, due to which it overflows as many people are using the toilets on a daily basis.”

On the issue of overflowing sewage from a housing society, Kunkolkar said the panchayat has already written to the Chimbel Primary Health Centre (PHC) to initiate action against the housing society.

When contacted, Chimbel PHC Medical Officer Dr Jude D’Souza informed that a notice has already been served to the housing society to initiate steps to ensure that the sewage doesn’t overflow onto the road.

“If the housing society fails to take remedial steps, further action will be initiated,” said Dr D’Souza, while adding that on an earlier occasion, water and electricity connection to the society was disconnected.
