The Shadow Council for Margao on Wednesday launched a signature campaign against the ordinance amending the Municipal Act, which pertains to the house tax for premises within municipal limits.
SCM Convener Savio Coutinho informed that a memorandum has been prepared, which will be handed over to the three MLAs associated with the Margao Municipal Council.
“Through the memorandum, we wish to urge the MLAs concerned to address the issue of house tax, which incidentally has skipped the attention of the representatives, who are seen being vocal on the amendment of section 88 only, which is related to the markets,” Coutinho stated.
The signature campaign was launched at Ambaji-Fatorda and was largely attended. Adv Seoula Vas explained the legal provisions in the notified amendments and the financial implications for the taxpayers.
Coutinho said the campaign shall be carried out in all the 25 wards in the constituencies of Margao, Fatorda and Curtorim and a protest shall also be staged near the Margao Municipal Council building on January 23, 2021, at 4pm.
