About 20 shanties belonging to migrant fishermen along the national highway near Vales Shipyard at Sancoale were demolished amid heavy police force on Thursday.
According to sources, all the shanties belonging to the migrant fishermen and PWD contractors were demolished in the presence of Sancoale Sarpanch Girish Pillai, panchayat secretary, local Panch Succorina Vales and RTI activist Narayan Naik.
The locals had raised the issue after an accident occurred in the area injuring four people and a minor child. Accordingly, Sarpanch Pillai conducted inspection and directed the migrants to clear the area. However, the migrants had sought 7 days time as the patients who were injured in the accident had to visit GMC Hospital on daily basis.
Sarpanch Pillai had written a letter to Verna Police seeking force in case the migrants do not vacate the area.
As the migrants failed to vacate the area, the panchayat secretary on Thursday sought police force and razed the shanties belonging to migrants and PWD contractors.
Panch Succorina Vales intervened and requested to give them additional seven days time as there were patients in the shanties. However, keeping in mind the request of the local panch, the sarpanch and the secretary decided to keep two shanties for the injured migrants on humanitarian grounds and demolished the remaining shanties.
"This had been termed as an accident spot and we don't want more accidents here. We are a new panchayat team not to be taken lightly. I will take immediate action in case the residents are facing any problems. These two shanties have been given seven days time following request from the local panch on humanitarian grounds," said Pillai.
RTI activist Narayan Naik said: "I had raised this issue in the gram sabha and was hoping that action will be taken. Today I can say that the panchayat has done the right job and I thank the panchayat for taking swift action and demolishing these shanties."
