The body of a dead Greek sailor and an injured sailor were brought to the MPT, following a fire incident in the sea.
The body was later flown in to New Delhi on Saturday, to be handed over to the Greek Embassy for further repatriation procedures.
According to Jairam Naik, branch manager of Goa branch of Atlantic Global Shipping Pvt Ltd, the 55-year-old Greek second engineer, Panormitis Margkros, expired in a fire incident reported on a ship ‘MV Faneromeni’ on August 19.
“The ship was in the high sea about 635 nautical miles from the Goa coast and proceeding from Fujairah Port to St Elizabeth Port South Africa, when a fire incident was reported in the engine room of the ship.”
“The second engineer, Margkros, expired while the third engineer Vlachos Alexandros (26) was injured and suffered burn injuries and respiratory problem. The ship blacked out immediately with the engine fire and the shipping company was informed about the incident,” said Naik.
“Another ship of the same shipping management company ‘MV Prigipos’ was to arrive in Goa port with cargo and the ship then went to the location, where the previous ship had blacked out and took the body of the second engineer and the injured third engineer, before arriving to MPT on August 26.”
“After being informed about the incident, we carried out all procedures to take the body from ship upon arrival at MPT. We further communicated with all statutory agencies, including MPT, Coastal Police, Immigration, Customs, Marine Mercantile department, Port Health Officer and South Goa Collector for necessary permissions,” said Naik.
Naik said on receiving all clearances, the body was taken to the port and the injured third engineer was shifted to a private hospital, where he is still recovering and is stable.
“We have been in touch with the Greek Embassy as well and coordinate with all agencies. The body was handed over to the custody of Mormugao police, after a case of unnatural death was reported.”
“The body was sent to Chicalim hospital for a Covid test and later to GMC for preservation and subsequently to Hospicio, where the post mortem was conducted on Thursday.”
“After the post mortem, the body was then handed over to an agency appointed by the Greek Embassy along with all original documents, including the passport and belongings of the deceased, so that the body could be transported to Greece for final rites.”
“We sent the body to New Delhi by flight on Saturday where it will be received by officials for further repatriation formalities,” Naik added.
