A fire, suspected to have been caused by a short circuit, broke out at a bakery inside the Mapusa Municipal Market in the early hours of Friday, causing losses estimated at around Rs 80,000. However, prompt action by the Fire and Emergency Services prevented a major mishap in the crowded market area.

According to sources, the incident took place at Ganesh Bakery after vendors who had arrived early for the weekly Friday market noticed smoke coming from the closed shop.

As Friday is the main market day in Mapusa, a large number of vendors and shoppers gather in the area from the morning hours. On noticing the smoke, the vendors immediately alerted the Fire and Emergency Services.

Fire personnel rushed to the spot and managed to control the blaze before it could spread to nearby shops in the market.

The owner of Ganesh Bakery said the fire was suspected to have been caused by a short circuit after the staff allegedly failed to switch off the power supply on Thursday night due to a misunderstanding.

Officials said the timely action of the fire personnel helped avert a major mishap in the busy market area. No injuries were reported in the incident.
