The Bardez Deputy Collector Gaurish Shankhawalkar has issued show cause notices to 37 scrapyards at Mushirwada-Colvale, after these scrapyards were found to have been set up after illegally converting agricultural land for non-agriculture purposes.
On December 7, 2018, the scrapyard belonging to Mahamod Khan at Mushiwada had been engulfed in a major fire and over 30 fire tenders were deployed to extinguish the fire. The fire mishap had also posed danger to the nearby power grid.
Bardez Mamlatdar and the talathi later surveyed the village and found 48 scrapyards operating at Colvale. Locals informed the talathi that these scrapyards were operating since 2009 and were on agricultural land.
The talathi found out that agricultural land had been converted into non-agricultural land without obtaining permission from authorities.
The talathi then submitted his report to Deputy Collector Gaurish Shankhawalkar who issued show cause notices to 37 scrapyards under the Goa Land Revenue Code and said hearing in the matter is in progress.
Meanwhile, the deputy collector has also asked the electricity department and the Goa Pollution Control Board to submit reports regarding power supply and pollution at the scrapyards in Colvale.
Although the order was issued about one-and-half months ago, sources said no report have been filed as yet.
