Union AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik on Saturday led a delegation comprising villagers of Old Goa and members of  Pornem Goencho Nagrik Monch (PGNM) which submitted a written representation to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant voicing their lore to the proposed garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim.

The group of around 10 persons met CM Sawant and reiterated their apprehensions and concerns about having a garbage treatment plant in the vicinity of a UNESCO world heritage site.

Shripad Naik is the second prominent BJP leader to stand up with the villagers against his own party's government, the first being Cumbarjua MLA Pandurang Madkaikar.

Several reasons have been listed in the written representation which include concerns that the size of the area allocated for the facility is insufficient, that the buffer zone should be in already acquired and allocated area, failure of the authorities to create such a buffer zone in the last 12 year despite assurance and the fact that numerous residential projects, schools and hospitals have been granted permission within 100 to 500 of the proposed facility.

Overall impact on the surrounding environment due to pollution and emissions as well as traffic congestion issues have also been added to the list of concerns.
