Deputy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes has said honesty and sincerity should be the hallmark of credit societies in the State.
Fernandes was speaking after inaugurating the extension counter of Madgaon School Complex Coop Credit Society Ltd at Chaudi, Canacona on Tuesday in the presence of ex-minister Ramesh Tawadkar, ex-Canacona MLA Vijay Pai Khot and several teachers of Canacona taluka.
“Over the years, credit societies have undergone a huge change. There was sincerity, honesty and loyalty in credit by the ‘confer’, a type of credit lending societies operated by our forefathers.”
“While there have been accusations of embezzlement against some present credit societies, we also have credit societies operated by educationists themselves and they have become a hallmark of sincerity and honesty,” Fernandes said.
Tawadkar and Khot congratulated the teachers of Madgaon School Complex for successfully operating the credit society since its inception in 1980 and for enrolling the teaching community from Canacona as its members. CMC Chairperson Nitu Desai also spoke on the occasion.
On the occasion, two society members, as well as teachers from Canacona and meritorious students at SSC and HSSC exams of the previous academic year, were facilitated by Fernandes.
The Society Chairman Kisan Phadte gave a brief description of the society’s activities, while Secretary Babaji Sawant highlighted the achievements of the society and justified the need to extend services to Canacona by opening an extension counter.
Also present were Society Advisory Board Chairman Dr Sanjay Sawant Desai, Vice-Chairman Peter Gomes and others.
