There may soon be tears shed in home kitchens and garlic, not onion, will be the culprit.
Prices of the quintessential food seasoning in Goan and Indian recipes have surged to Rs 400 a kilogram. Apart from Goan kitchens, the price rise is bound to affect the operations of restaurants, particularly those specialising in Chinese cuisine and fast food.
Apart from high prices, garlic is also in short supply in almost all markets. According to wholesalers, prices range between Rs 400-600 a kilogram and the spike has happened due to a fall in harvest.
In Mapusa, traders said the prices have risen even higher at between Rs 500 to Rs 600 a kilogram depending on its quality. In the CCP market in Panaji, some traders were even selling it at prices as high as Rs 600 per kilogram.
Before this spike in prices, garlic was priced between Rs 100 and Rs 150 per kilogram and between 50 to 60 bags of garlic were sold on a daily basis in the wholesale market.
