The figures are staggering and speak volumes. Even as the Hospicio South Goa District Hospital continues to make headlines for all the wrong reasons—ranging from infrastructure gaps to acute staff shortages—it remains a crucial lifeline for the common man in South Goa.

Despite a severe shortage of doctors, paramedical personnel and Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS), the hospital has continued to shoulder an ever-growing healthcare burden.

Consider this: In the 2025 calendar year alone, the South Goa District Hospital attended to almost four lakh patients in its Out-Patient Department (OPD), around 3,99,941 to be precise. During the same period, around 43,693 patients were admitted to various wards, while the casualty department handled as many as 63,093 cases.

Before the government moved to augment bed capacity, the Hospicio hospital had frequently made headlines over patients being treated on wheelchairs and stretchers due to the acute shortage of beds. Yet, official statistics show that despite these constraints, the hospital managed to accommodate close to 25,000 patients in the male and female medicine and surgery wards, around 24,412 patients to be precise, in a single year.

As usual, the maternity ward catered to the growing number of patients from the South Goa district.  A glance at the statistics shows that around 4,051 patients were admitted in the maternity ward in the year 2025. This means that around 337 patients had been treated at the maternity ward on an average per  month.

Similar are the statistics pertaining to the paediatric ward. Around 3,902 patients took treatment in the paediatric wards of the South Goa district hospital during the calendar year.

The pressure is most visible in the OPDs, which witnessed an overwhelming rush of patients throughout the year. With 3,99,941 OPD cases in 2025, the hospital handled an average of 32,411 patients every month—amounting to over 1,000 patients a day.

Huge queues outside the OPDs, particularly on Mondays, have become a common sight, with citizens increasingly demanding a more efficient system to manage the patient load and ease the strain on both patients and healthcare workers.
