Rider crushed to death in hit, run near BITS Pilani campus

A 32-year-old two-wheeler rider was crushed to death in a hit-and-run accident reported on Sunday morning on National Highway 17B, opposite the main gate of the BITS Pilani Goa campus.

The deceased has been identified as Pravin Shirolkar (32), a resident of Dabolim and a native of Kolhapur. Shirolkar was employed with Cipla at the Verna Industrial Estate and was on his way to work at the time of the accident.

According to the Verna police, the incident occurred when Shirolkar was riding his (GA-06 A 4727) towards the Verna side from MES Junction. A tipper truck bearing registration number GA-04-T-6274, which was proceeding in the same direction, allegedly dashed into the scooter from behind.

Police sources said the truck was being driven by Ajay Das, a resident of Bihar, who allegedly drove the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner. Due to the impact of the collision, Shirolkar was knocked down and came under the rear wheel of the truck, resulting in fatal injuries. He died on the spot.

After the accident, the truck driver fled the scene without stopping, triggering panic among motorists and locals along the busy highway stretch. However, police said the driver later presented himself at the Verna police station, following which the vehicle was taken into custody for inspection.

On receiving information, Verna police rushed to the scene, conducted a spot inspection and shifted the body for medico-legal formalities. An offence has been registered under sections 281, 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Mahesh Bhomkar of Verna police station under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
