Pedestrian killed after being run over by car in Velsao

A 32-year-old pedestrian lost his life after being run over by a car in a road accident reported on Saturday morning near the Mathany Saldanha Bridge while proceeding towards Dando, Velsao.

The deceased has been identified as Mahavir Ram (32), a resident of Velsao and a native of Chhattisgarh. He sustained grievous injuries after being hit by a Wagon-R car and was later declared brought dead at the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Cansaulim.

According to the Verna police, the incident occurred at around 11.40 am when the accused driver, Ramnath Bicholkar, a resident of Verla Para, Bardez, was driving his Wagon-R car from Cansaulim towards Dando, Velsao. On reaching near the Mathany Saldanha Bridge, the driver allegedly drove the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner and, without taking proper care and caution and ran over the pedestrian.

Police said the impact left the victim with serious injuries. He was immediately shifted to the PHC, Cansaulim, where the doctor on duty declared him brought dead.

Based on a complaint lodged by Head Constable Siddesh Dessai, Verna police registered an offence under sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, against the accused driver.

The body of the deceased has been preserved at the South Goa District Hospital, Margao, for further medico-legal formalities.

Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Prisly Carvalho of Verna police station under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
