Hospicio South Goa district hospital may have hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons of late.

Here is a case wherein a three-year-old boy not only went home fully recovered from a high fever, but the behaviour of the doctors touched the heart of the child’s mother. Accepting the mother’s compliment, district hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Rajendra Borkar said the appreciation will go a long way to motivate the hard-working doctors and para-medics in providing health care to the people.

Marian Vaz told the media that relatives brought her three-year-old ailing son to the South district hospital as he was suffering from high fever. “When I landed at the district hospital, even I had a doubt in my mind why the relative had to get my child to the government hospital. But, I could not speak out simply because I was tensed up because my son had a high fever. The fever was just shooting up and it was breaking my heart since I had never seen him in such a situation. In fact, this was the first time I had come to a government hospital,” she said.

Vaz said even her husband, working abroad, questioned her about the decision to admit their son to the government hospital and even wanted me to get a discharge for the son to take treatment in a private hospital. “The situation was getting from bad to worse, but on August 30, Dr Rumilda attended to my child. Her very presence and friendly nature gave us confidence. The doctor even personally accompanied us to the X-ray section for an x-ray, which showed there was a lung infection. Both Dr Rumilda and Dr Sushanti took good care of my son. They indeed touched my heart as my son was finally discharged on September 4”, she added.

Medical Superintendent Dr Rajendra Borkar expressed happiness that someone has come to him to convey appreciation for the work put in by hospital doctors. “She was very happy with the behaviour of my doctors towards the patient and the relatives. The child is the most precious thing that a mother could ever have. She was supported by our doctors Rumilda and Sushanti,” he said.

Making a plea to the people to avail services at the South Goa hospital, Dr Borkar said, “People should come and help us to help them. Little cooperation from the public side is needed. Thanks to Health Minister Vishwajit Raje, the South Goa district hospital is more than a corporate hospital. It’s good that we get appreciation.”

He added: “Normally, in eight out of 10 cases, we get not exactly complaints, but suggestions. We then discuss the complaints or suggestions at our monthly meeting with the doctors. The appreciation from the three-year-old boy’s mother too will be discussed at our meeting to motivate our hospital doctors and staff.”
