The South Goa Road Safety and Traffic committee meeting held on Friday have underscored the need for the Health Services to provide data on the number of road accident victims, who are in coma or have sustained permanent disabilities on account of road accidents.
The committee has also stressed on the need for the Education Department to ensure that every school constitutes the Children Transport Committee and to make them functional without any delay.
On the number of illegal and unauthorised speed breakers put up on several roads in the district, the committee has decided to study the Google Maps to identify the illegal speed breakers before removing them from the roads.
Given that a number of tourists are involved in road accidents, the committee has decided to ask the Tourism Department to play a significant role in spreading awareness amongst the tourists using the rent-a-car and bikes.
After the meeting, GOACAN coordinator Roland Martins told the media that the district road safety panel has deliberated and discussed on a host of issues involving road and traffic safety. “Since accident victims from South Goa are referred to the Goa Medical College, Bambolim, we have asked the Health Services to provide a list of road victims in coma and have sustained permanent disability. We get data on the number of persons died in road accidents, but providing details on victim with permanent disabilities will go a long way in understanding the accident rate and to work out remedial measures,” he added.
Another issue discussed at the meeting was to ensure that the Excise Department put up no drinking and driving signages outside bars and restaurants in the district. “This exercise will start from Salcete before it is extended across the South Goa district,” he added.
The issue of acute traffic congestion at the Cuncolim market area, especially on Sundays also figured at the meeting. Members highlighted how traffic had literally come to a standstill in the Cuncolim market area during the India Energy Week held at ONGC, Betul.
After discussions, it was decided to urge the Police Department to expedite the proposal to set up a traffic cell at Cuncolim on a war footing.
