Sunday’s fatal accident on the Rawanfond-Navelim road at Aquem-Baixo brought agitated residents onto the roads, demanding a ban on the plying of heavy vehicles as per a notification.
Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro joined the local residents to demand urgent measures to ban the entry of heavy vehicles on the road, as the agitated residents claimed that as many as seven fatal accidents has taken place on the road in recent times.
Pointing accusing fingers at the men-in-uniform for the failure to reign in the heavy vehicles, the residents have threatened to take the law into their hands if vehicles continue to ply on the narrow Rawanfond-Navelim road.
Agitated residents told the Navelim MLA how precious lives have been lost as the police have failed to man the traffic and stop heavy vehicles from plying on the road. Faleiro immediately spoke to DySP, traffic Prabodh Shirwaikar with a plea to implement the notification banning heavy vehicles by erecting boards, besides i8nstalling speed breakers and road rumblers. The MLA also tried to call District Collector, South Swapnil Naik, but was not able to do so. “I will discuss the situation on the Rawanfond-Navelim road at Aquem Baixo village with the district collector on Monday. It is shocking to note that heavy vehicles continue to ply on the road when there’s a notification banning the same,” Faleiro said
He said the government had recently announced plans to take a host of precautions to curb the rising number of accidents, but lamented that there’s no change in the ground reality. “Local residents claimed that seven lives have been lost on this road because of plying of heavy traffic. Time has come to
implement the notification,” he said.
Local youth blamed the men-in-uniform for turning a blind eye to the heavy trucks plying on the road while acting with alacrity to challan two-wheelers riders for not wearing helmets. “The police park their vehicles on this road as if it is a national highway, but fail to act against heavy vehicles,” local youth protested.
Woman crushed under wheels of truck
MARGAO: A 65-year-old woman was killed instantaneously when she came under the wheels of a truck in an accident which occurred between two bikes at Rawanfond junction.
According to police, the accident occurred when two bikes - one on which Siddharth (19), of Sanvordem was riding and the other with Francis (70), of Cuncolim with a pillion rider Fatima (65) also from Cuncolim, collided at Rawanfond junction.
Fatima was thrown off the two-wheeler and came under the wheels of a truck. She was killed on the spot, police informed.
Both the two-wheeler riders were also injured in the accident.
