The Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) South Goa president Rupert Pereira has petitioned the ST Commissioner to initiate action into the assault on him by locals from Benaulim.
In his petition submitted to the Commissioner Deepak Karmalkar, on Monday, Pereira has prayed that action be initiated against the accused persons under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Atrocities (Prevention) Act, 1989.
Pereira was accompanied by RGP MLA Viresh Borkar, treasurer Ajay Kholkar and other members of the party.
Pereira has further highlighted how a crowd attacked him and RGP member Antush Rebello on December 17 in the morning when the duo had gone to shoot a documentary of a local farmer. “After the shooting of the documentary got over and we were about to leave, a group of locals attacked us without any reason,” Pereira stated in his petition while stating that he was called by his ST community to which he belongs.
Pereira has prayed that action be initiated against the crowd and he has named three persons in the petition who were leading the crowd.
MLA Borkar stated that Karmalkar has assured that he would intervene in the issue and ensure that justice is served.
“But, the sad part is that the Colva police has still not filed any FIR in the matter and the accused are still not arrested,” Borkar stated while demanding that the police arrest the accused at the earliest.
Borkar has further alleged that the attack was a pre-planned attack with political motive.
“As Pereira has been shortlisted for the South Goa MP seat, he was attacked but we are not going to be cowed down by such goondagiri,” Borkar stated.
