The St Cruz panchayat has stopped door-to-door collection in the village, after Bondir locals stopped the construction of a waste sorting centre near the St Cruz playground.
Responding to queries by The Goan on the discontinuation of waste collection, Sarpanch Lawrence Rodrigues said: “We have stopped collection of waste since the past two days as the waste sorting centre, which was constructed by the panchayat near the playground, was halted by Bondir locals.”
“As of now, we do not have any site to sort the dry waste and we were constructing the sorting centre near the playground, but Bondir locals raised objections,” Rodrigues pointed out, while outlining it as the sole reason for the stoppage of waste
collection.
“If we collect the dry waste, where are we supposed to sort it,” Rodrigues questioned. When Bondir Panch Edwin Dias was questioned by The Goan in this regard, he said the locals had objected to the construction of a sorting centre. “Already, there is tonnes of waste lying near the playground which has not been cleared as yet. So, why should the people allow construction of a sorting centre,” countered Dias. “Earlier, I had cleared more than 20 tonnes of waste which was dumped near the playground and it has become more of a dump site,” he added.
