Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar announced that the State government plans to establish sports schools under the Khelo India scheme at various locations across Goa.
Each school will be developed with an investment of Rs 10 crore, providing modern infrastructure and training facilities to nurture young talent.
Speaking at the MLA Cup ceremony organised by MLA Premendra Shet in Maem, Tawadkar said the initiative aims to overcome seasonal disruptions like monsoons, which currently limit training to six months a year. “We are allocating Rs 10 crore for these sports schools to build spacious grounds and world-class amenities. This will give a new impetus to sports in Goa,” he added.
MLA Premendra Shet highlighted that the MLA Cup has been instrumental in identifying and encouraging rural sporting talent. The event has successfully scouted players who later excel at State and national levels.
Among those attending the programme were Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Tanavade, Bicholim MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye, ZP member Kunda Mandrekar, Sarpanch Dayanand Karbotkar, Vasudev Gaonkar, and officials from Vedanta company.
The programme included the distribution of sports kits to participants, and felicitation of outstanding athletes.
Khelo India is a national programme launched by the Central government to promote sports at the grassroots level. Goa’s decision to set up sports schools aligns with the scheme’s objectives of improving infrastructure, providing quality coaching, and encouraging youth participation in sports.
