Goa’s spell of oppressive heat will continue into Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heatwave-like conditions along with high humidity. While isolated showers over the ghats and adjoining areas could offer some relief over the weekend, the forecast points to little respite from the heat in the late morning and afternoon. The IMD, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, reported heatwave-like conditions in Goa on Thursday, when Goa recorded a maximum temperature of 37.4°C. The minimum temperature was 23.3°C and hot and humid conditions prevailed. The State has been recording above 36°C since Monday, prompting the IMD to issue a health advisory.
Goa is among the few parts of the country continuing to face hot and humid weather, with the IMD identifying the Konkan region, Goa and Coastal Karnataka as the areas experiencing these conditions. The forecast for Friday retained the warning for hot and humid conditions, as well as a heatwave-like situation.
The weather outlook for Saturday and Sunday does not carry a heatwave-like conditions warning. However, hot and humid weather is expected to persist. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely over the ghats and adjoining areas of the three districts. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are also likely at isolated places over the ghats and adjoining areas of North Goa and Kushavati districts.
From October 19 to 21, light rain or thundershowers are forecast over the ghat areas of North Goa and Kushavati districts.
The IMD Goa has said maximum temperatures are likely to remain above normal for the next three days before gradually declining. Its seven-day forecast places temperatures at 35-36°C till October 20, easing to 34-35°C on October 21.
