MARGAO
Stray cattle menace has come to haunt motorists and pedestrians in the commercial capital, with the strays literally holding traffic movement in the city to ransom, but the Margao Municipality has no mechanism in place to reign in on the strays.
Right from Navelim to Aquem, Colva circle to the Bolshe circle and Power house, and not to mention the heart of the town, which is hit by the menace of stray cattle, hampering traffic movement and posing dangers to motorists and pedestrians alike.
The Margao Municipality had in the past maintained a cattle pound, which is lying in a dilapidated state, indicating that the pound is hardly used to house the strays.
Sources in the civic body informed that there's no mechanism in place in the civic body to reign in on the stray cattle menace. "In the past, the Municipality had constituted a squad of workers, which were working under the directions of the market inspector. The fate of the stray cattle squad remains unknown," informed an official in the know.
Sources said that the Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai had recently taken serious cognizance of stray cattle holding traffic to ransom at the KTC and Colva traffic circle, only to realise later that the Municipality has no wherewithal to take care of the cattle. "If the Municipality decides to crack a whip on the stray cattle, the babus will have to first put the cattle pound in place as it has been craving for repairs and renovation," sources said.
Areas affected by stray cattle on any given day includes the KTC bus stand, Colva circle, Bolshe circle, the Aquem Power House, heart of the town, besides Navelim-flyover road.
