Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao on Thursday has called for strengthening of the Colva police station “ which has a jurisdiction over Salcete’s entire coastal belt -- with additional manpower, while demanding the three rapists from Indore should be hanged till death.

He further said the time has come for Goans to do an introspection over the presence of over two lakh migrants in rented rooms, right from Salcete and Calangute and Baga beach belt in the North.

Addressing the media, Churchill said the Colva police is in dire need of minimum 10 head constables and 20 police constables to tide over the huge manpower shortage facing the Colva police station.

“The police station is facing a crunch of vehicles and the government should immediately provide two vehicles for the police station,” he said.

The Benaulim MLA pointed out that the Colva police patrol the beach belt till 7 pm in the evening for want of inadequate manpower, saying the police station should be provided with additional manpower for round the clock patrolling.

He expressed his concern over the presence of migrants in rented rooms all along the coastal belt. “People rent their rooms for huge rent. There’s no vigil on these migrants,” he said, while calling for an introspection amongst Goans on leasing out their rooms for the migrants.

Citing a recent case of chain snatching in his native village Varca, Churchill said he had asked the police to intensify patrolling in the village, but the police has expressed their helplessness in the matter for want of manpower. He said the police should also intensify patrolling along the Assolna-Cavelossim bridge, saying one often comes across youth on the bridge till the wee hours of the morning. “There’s absolutely no patrolling either on the Assolna side or the Cavelossim side of the bridge, which had seen the death of a young man in a hit and run case,” he added.
