The indefinite hunger strike by sugarcane farmers from Goa entered the fourth day on Friday and irked over the silence of the BJP government, they have now decided to change the venue of their agitation from Darbandora to the Azad Maidan in Panaji.
While the agitation at Darbandora would attract around 200 farmers daily over the past four days, the association is planning to have at least 300 farmers present for the agitation at Panaji on Monday.
Unhappy that the government has shown no concern towards the sugarcane farmers, the agitating farmers on Friday morning offered prayers at Datta Mandir at Darbandora for better sense to prevail with the government.
The farmers sought divine intervention to make the government understand the problems the sugarcane farmers are facing due to the closure of the Sanjivani Sugar Factory and the adverse effects it would have on the livelihood of the people involved on sugarcane plantation once the five-year period of payment of compensation comes to an end next year.
Francisco Mascarenhas informed that the decision to shift the agitation to the Azad Maidan in Panaji was unanimously taken by all members of the association.
Mascarenhas also appealed to the sugarcane farmers not to get carried away with efforts made by some individuals to divide the farmers on the issue of Sanjivani Sugar Factory.
