PANAJI: Former minister Subhash Shirodkar, who quit as Congress MLA a fortnight ago and joined the ruling BJP, was on Wednesday appointed chairman of the state-owned lender Economic Development Corporation.
Shirodkar takes over from former Panaji MLA Siddharth Kuncolienkar who quit as chairman on Monday. The former Shiroda MLA, however takes over the organisation as the head of an unchanged board of directors which also worked under Kuncolienkar.
The notification issued on Wednesday by the Under Secretary (finance) names Shirodkar as one of 11 directors, including the managing director of the Corporation, all of who were also directors in the board headed by Kuncolienkar. Chartered Accountant Santosh Kenkre has been retained as vice-chairman.
Other members of the BoD include, hospitality and real estate entrepreneur Ralph de Souza, chartered accountants Sandeep Bhandare and Lalita Correia-Afonso, Dr Purushottam Pednekar, Shivprasad Manerkar, Ninad Karpe and a nominee of the State's Finance Secretary.
With Shirodkar's appointment, the ruling BJP-led coalition has accommodated one of the two legislators who helped it reduce the Opposition Congress party's strength from 16 to 14 and thus take away its 'single largest party' tag.
The other ex-legislator who along with Shirodkar, dramatically flew to Delhi and resigned his membership of the House before joining the BJP in the national capital, Dayanand Sopte has already gone on record to say he has been promised the chairmanship of the Goa Tourism Development Corporation.
GTDC is headed by Power Minister Nilesh Cabral as chairman, who continues to hold the post even after his elevation as cabinet minister. Cabral has claimed he has not been given any instruction to vacate the position.
Interestingly, Shirodkar and Sopte when the latter does get accommodated in a government position, will have to vacate the positions when they contest the by-polls to the seats they vacated - Shiroda and Mandrem - to circumvent the 'office of profit' regulation.
