The South Western Railways (SWR) has said it has taken up the infrastructural development work at two railway stations in Goa, with the double-tracking and electrification being given a special thrust all over India to strengthen railway network to deal with additional and faster trains.
As part of double-tracking between Kulem and Margao section, SWR authorities said the Sanvordem will be provided with a new station.
According to SWR authorities, the two-floored building, being built at a cost of around Rs 2 crore is 90 per cent complete, has been provided with new ticket counters, waiting rooms, provision of ramp, circulating area, high-level platform, washrooms, etc.
A new foot over bridge covering the entire six tracks has also been constructed at the Sanvordem railway station at a cost of Rs 2.1 crore to provide convenience to commuters and residents of Sanvordem.
Moreover, to have uninterrupted road traffic, a road underbridge is also being constructed at the Sanvordem yard to give relief to road users. About 50 per cent work of the underpass on the new doubling track is completed, providing relief to the road users as it is a very busy level crossing gate connecting Sanvordem and Margao, SWR officials added.
The SWR also stated that a new railway station building with modern facilities has also been constructed at Chandor at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore.
This new station building is provided with facilities like waiting hall, washrooms, new ticket counters, improved accessibility to Divyangan by providing convenient ramps. The construction work has been stopped since the past one month due to agitations.
Construction of a 1.5 km station approach road and development of circulating area at a cost of about Rs 3 crore has also been held up due to local opposition and hence work IS incompleted, the SWR added.
