Take a hard ride: VAT on diesel and petrol hiked

Petrol will now cost about Rs 1.30 more, diesel prices to go up by 60 paise

The State government on Thursday increased the value added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel in a bid to mop up additional revenues in the face of the pandemic hit cash flows into the State's coffers.

With a two percent increase in VAT on petrol from 25 to 27 per-cent, the fuel already spiralling due to higher central taxation and crude recovery globally will cost about Rs 1.30 more per litre in Goa.

The VAT on diesel has been hiked by one percentage point from 22 to 23 percent and it's per-litre price will go up by 60 paise.

Under Secretary (finance) Pranab Bhat issued the notification effecting the hike in VAT on petrol and diesel. It states that the new VAT rates will be effective no sooner it is published in the official gazette probably by midnight Thursday-Friday.

Meanwhile, the State government has directed all its departments to clear pending bills at the earliest possible. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant issued the directions after chairing a meeting with the Officers of Finance team and all Corporations under Receivables Exchange of India Ltd (RXIL) and reviewing the pending bills.
