MARGAO
The Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) along with the taxpayers and contributors to municipal revenue held a protest in front of the Margao Municipal Council building to register their opposition to the proposed hike in house tax and garbage fee for the "assessed” premises.
Some tense moments were witnessed when the police stopped the protesters from entering the MMC building to present the representation. At the time when the Chairperson instructed the Margao Town Police Inspector Tulsidas Naik to allow only five people inside, the crowd demanded that the chairperson come down instead. Finally, the Chairperson agreed to allow 10 people to meet him in his chamber.
The delegation demanded the MMC withholds any hike in the taxes till all the unassessed premises are brought under the tax net.
The unjustified and discriminatory system of taxation adopted by the council is found to be targeting only the legally assessed premises, while those premises that are not assessed are conferred the services at our cost, they said through their representation to the Chairperson of MMC.
“We have been consistently raising our voice against the taxation system which only pinches the pockets of the legally assessed premises, while the unassessed premises pay absolutely nothing towards the services claimed to be provided by the council,” they argued.
