The coastal political landscape is set for fresh turbulence with prominent taxi union leader Yogesh Govekar – popularly known as Mogambo – declaring his decision to contest the upcoming Zilla Panchayat elections from Anjuna.

The constituency has been reserved for the OBC category.

Govekar, long known for his outspoken views and influence among tourist taxi operators, confirmed that he is preparing to take on the BJP either as an Independent or as the consensus candidate of the opposition bloc.

“Yes, I am contesting the ZP elections from Anjuna. Discussions are underway with opposition parties so that I can be the joint opposition candidate against the BJP,” Govekar told The Goan.

His decision has triggered palpable unease within coastal political circles.

For years, tourist taxi operators have been seen as a support base closely aligned with Calangute MLA Michael Lobo.

Govekar’s entry, therefore, not only challenges that perception but also threatens to disrupt existing political equations across the Anjuna–Calangute belt.

With the ZP polls approaching, his candidature is expected to inject both unpredictability and intensity into the contest, potentially reshaping alliances and voter dynamics in one of the region’s most politically sensitive constituencies.
