Angry taxi operators protested outside the Manohar International Airport (MIA) at Mopa on Tuesday against the hike in taxi parking charges from Rs 80 to Rs 200.

A large police force was present at the airport to prevent any untoward incident and restricted the taximen to the main gate of the airport.

Speaking to reporters at the site, the taximen claimed that they were earlier paying Rs 80 as parking fees at the MIA, but now they were being forced to pay Rs 200.

They claimed that instead of solving the problems, the government and the airport have been compounding the problems of taxi operators at the MIA.

Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar met the agitating taxi traders at the Mopa International Airport where the taxi operators had gathered and assured the taxi drivers to resolve their problems by meeting Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

He said he would impress upon the chief minister that until this issue is resolved the airport should not levy the increased taxi parking fee and should retain the earlier fee of Rs 80.

He expressed confidence that the chief minister would find a suitable solution in this regard.

Satisfied with his assurance, the taxi drivers decided to defer the agitation and decided to await Arlekar’s meeting with the chief minister.
