Criticizing the recent circular released by the Director of Education stating not to hurry up with the portion in view of the forthcoming U-17 World Cup, the Goa Higher Secondary Teachers Association, President, Anant Pissurlekar on Wednesday said the circular was "wrong" and "misleading".
"The September 15 circular of the education department issued to all schools and institutes in the State is an attempt to pacify anxious parents and students. The circular issued so late in the day is wrong and misleading and will serve no purpose," Pissurlekar said while addressing a news conference at Mapusa on Wednesday.
Picking holes in the contents of the circular, Pissurlekar said the circular directed educational institutes not to complete the portion in a hurry by taking extra periods and overburden the students but the circular was silent on the total marks to set the paper.
"We have been instructed not to take extra classes, but there are no instructions to reduce the weight of the marks. If we have to set the normal 80 marks paper for class 11, we will have to complete that much syllabus. And we cannot do it without taking extra classes," he said.
He said in such circumstance the teachers will be forced to take extra classes or else they will not be able to complete the portion to set a paper of 80 marks.
"The circular is bound to affect the student community even as the teachers will take up lessons for the sake of it, in order to complete the syllabus," he said.
Pissurlekar said the circular was the outcome of apprehensions raised by parents as students were pressurized by teachers, who were more concerned about completion of their syllabus.
He further said the department issued the circular without taking the higher secondary teachers' association into confidence.
