Tension rent the air at the SGPDA wholesale fish market on late Thursday evening over the entry of fish transporting vehicles inside the market.
The Fatorda police also rushed to the market as a precautionary measure and to avert any law and order situation.
Trouble began when the contractor appointed by the PDA stopped a 10-wheeler heavy vehicle laden with fish from entering the market, saying the PDA norms are clear only six-wheelers are allowed inside the market.
After a face-off, the traders drove the 10-wheeler vehicle inside the market, but was later told to move out by the police.
The contractor later told the media that he cannot allow the 10-wheeler vehicles inside the market since the heavy vehicles get stuck in the muck affecting the business activity.
The traders, on the other hand, maintained that the contractor is seeking revenge since they had gone to the SGPDA Member Secretary Sheikh Ali earlier in the day to complaint of extortion of money by the contractor.
The contractor, however, vehemently denied the allegations of extortion, saying the team has been charging the fees prescribed by the PDA.
