For years now, a lone pole laid over a water canal came in handy for the beleaguered residents of Gongrank-Veroda in the Cuncolim Municipal Council to cross over the canal built in the locality over two decades ago.
They had encountered difficulties to cross over to the other side, especially to their agriculture fields and farms, during the monsoon. Children too faced hardships as they were left with no option than to take a risky walk on the pole to make it to the other side. Their hardships, risks and troubles, however, will now be a thing of the past.
For, the Water Resources Department on Thursday has initiated work on a culvert at the canal site, which is expected to give relief to the local residents.
Cuncolim MLA Clafacio Dias who launched the work of the culvert, said he had given an assurance to the voters of Gongrank during his election campaign four and half years ago that he would try his level best to end their hardships by constructing a culvert at the canal site.
He, however, pointed out that he could not get the work on the culvert started after the then government stopped all his works just because he was in the opposition. “It was only when I left the Congress to join the BJP, I have got the sanction for the culvert work through the office of WRD Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues,” he said, adding that the culvert work costing around Rs 10 lakh will be completed on topmost priority.
