SANGUEM
In a shocking incident, thousands of cucumbers have been dumped in a stone quarry at Avalimoll-Netravali in Sanguem taluka.
The cucumbers, which were reportedly dumped in the open stone quarry last week, have begun to rot. To make matters worse, waste from the decaying cucumbers have begun to flow into the nearby river which, incidentally, connects to the Selaulim Dam reservoir.
While locals are unaware as to who dumped the thousands of cucumbers in the quarry, Netravali Panch Rakhi Naik has demanded an immediate inquiry into the matter.
Naik has accused some persons from the Horticulture Corporation of allegedly dumping the cucumbers into the quarry, a charge which officials of the Horticulture Corporation have flatly rejected.
Naik has appealed to authorities to take strict action against those responsible as it could have adverse effects on the lives of people using the river water.
Acting on a complaint lodged by Naik, Sanjay Dessai, the talathi attached to the Sanguem Mamlatdar’s office, on Monday conducted a site inspection in the presence of Rakhi Naik and Bhiku Kalmo, a local villager.
The talathi will forward the report to the Sanguem Mamlatdar for further action in the matter.
