Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte on Friday reiterated that Goa’s tourism industry has been performing above the national average while also conceding it faces unique challenges including overtourism and infrastructure strain.

Addressing a press conference after chairing the Goa Tourism Stakeholder Conclave at Dona Paula, Khaunte further said that the State government has been in discussions with the Central government to address issues related to air travel, connectivity and rising airfare. He also stated that the government is actively working on solutions to strike a balance between tourism growth and sustainability.

“We have raised with the Centre these challenges such as airfares, dynamics of air travel, new connectivity and connectivity with emerging markets …This is a continuous process and as we take recognition of these issues, we are certain all these issues are in transit...” he said, assuring the issues would be resolved.

With discussions and suggestions recorded at the conclave, the minister said it would be placed before the Goa Tourism Board chaired by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

Khaunte acknowledged that Goa experienced “a little overtourism” and that overcrowding at popular beaches like Baga and Calangute has led to friction between locals and tourists.

“We are aware of the strain on infrastructure and issues like waste management. We are working on improving public transport and ensuring cleaner beaches among other improvisations in collaboration with all the concerned departments and stakeholders,” he said.

The minister also claimed a rise in foreign tourist arrivals by 3 per cent despite concerns about infrastructure strain. He further spoke about efforts to attract quality tourists by enhancing beach cleanliness and ensuring visitors respect Goa’s culture and tradition.

“There are concerns that with the increasing presence of budget travellers it creates a lot of challenges such as disregard for local rules and culture. But with enhanced beach cleanliness and facilities to attract quality tourists… We are looking at making stronger efforts on educating visitors to respect our local tradition, culture and boundaries,” he added, citing the talks are underway with CM.

The minister highlighted a surge in registered accommodations stating that while there were over 3,000 registered hotels in 2022, the number grew to 9,000 approx by 2024. The government is also exploring options to boost supply through homestays to cater to rising demand.

He defended ongoing construction projects responding to criticism about disruptions caused by road works. “We have both sides of the coin. When you come to a tourist destination, you need to provide the best of the (infra) services. Media had also complained that there needs to be improvised electricity supply, underground cabling, sewerage, etc… it is our endeavour that sustainable development takes place,” he said adding, “Look at the difference in Goa’s infrastructure compared to ten years ago. For example, there were complaints about traffic delays of 2-3 hours during the new Zuari Bridge construction but now you can travel in 30 minutes.”

Khaunte also took a strong stance against social media influencers accusing some of tarnishing Goa’s image for personal gain.
