Trade unions in Goa have decided to participate in the all India general strike slated for January 8 and 9 called by central trade unions and mass organisations. The strike has been called to oppose the union government’s polices and also those of state governments across the country.
A joint platform of trade unions and mass organisations in Goa has prepared state specific major demands which include early resumption of mining activity in Goa and curbing mechanisms of all communal and divisive forces.
Unions have put a major demand to start mining in Goa on a sustainable manner and ensure full benefits of mining to all stakeholders besides the people of the state. They are also demanding a 80 per cent guaranteed employment to sons and daughters of the soil in private sector businesses.
The unions have reiterated their demand to control prices of all essential commodities (food items, petrol, diesel, LPG cylinders, electricity, water and transport)
A joint platform of trade unions and mass organisation has made Goa state specific demands to protect the self-employed taxi operators, bus operators, rickshaw operators, small hoteliers, restaurant and shack owners, fishermen, market vendors, small scale industries, traders and the artisans.
Other demands are revision of minimum wages to Rs 20,000 per month, withdrawal of land acquisition amendment bill, waiver of farm loans, abolition of contract labour system, implementation of social security cover to all organised and
unorganised workers.
