Margao’s New Market traders on Friday called on Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer with a host of grievances, including the installation of CCTV cameras in the market area after the recent murder and to ascertain the status of the long-delayed multi-parking project proposed by the civic body half-a-decade ago.
Led by trader Devi Borkar, the traders had an interaction with the Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar in the presence of some of the city fathers.
Borkar drew the attention of the Chief Officer to the rising number of crimes in the city by making a pointed reference to the murder of city jeweller Swapnil Walke in cold blood by a group of assailants in broad daylight.
He said the market area should be covered by CCTV surveillance cameras, even offering that the traders will not shy away from contributing towards the project.
The traders also underlined the need to complete the multi-level parking project at the earliest, saying around 80 per cent of the parking woes will be resolved. They also took up the issue of the defunct fire hydrants and the replacement of the electrical fittings.
The Chief Officer gave a patient hearing to the grievances expressed by the traders, saying the issues raised were genuine. In fact, Panchwadkar welcomed the suggestions made by the traders and offered the civic body’s support to them.
As far as the multi-level parking project is concerned, the Chief Officer told the traders that the civic body has already initiated the process to go for the same.
On the fire hydrants, the Chief Officer has promised to take up the issue with the PWD department since it involves water supply. Panchwadkar also agreed with the traders on the need to replace the worn-out electrical fittings and also promised to look into the issue of delay in the issuance of trade licenses to the traders.
