With an aim to reduce congestion and ensure smooth movement of traffic in town, the Mapusa Traffic Cell has requested for installation of CCTV cameras at strategic locations and fixing of signages at various places in the jurisdiction of Mapusa Municipal Council.
Mapusa Traffic PI Marlon D’Souza informed that a letter has been made to the Mapusa civic body on the need to install surveillance cameras at 17 spots around the town.
The traffic cell has suggested installing of the cameras at following junctions: Court, Karaswada, Peddem, Velina, market, Morod, Tar, Usapkar, Bodgeshwar (Canca side) and Siolim-Cunchelim (near Saibaba restaurant) besides at Housing Board Ganeshpuri, Hutatma Chowk, market main gate, Gandhi Circle, Union Pharmacy, Khorlim Simer and Priti International.
The Traffic Cell has also submitted a list of locations to the MMC for installation of signboards at nearly 100 different locations in and around Mapusa town.
The signages include no-parking, no-entry, one-way sign, junction ahead, bus stop, no-stopping, one-way sign, etc.
Some of the signages at key locations are: no-parking signboard near Chacha Nehru garden and post office, at Parrikar’s house in Khorlim, Holy Cross Girls hostel at Khorlim, Krishna Temple Khorlim, from Ganeshpuri junction to St Xavier’s College, court junction to milk booth junction, from Honda showroom to Duler football ground, near district hospital, from Kalangutkar hospital to Alankar theatre, near Bodgeshwar temple gate to Gandhi Circle, Hutatma Circle, from Mayur Hotel gate to Morod junction etc.
Similarly, a request has been made to install signages of no entry for heavy vehicles from 7 am to 2 pm and from 4 pm to 8 pm at Karaswada, Greenpark, mutton shop Parra, DMC College, Ganeshpuri and Cunchelim junctions.
“After monitoring CCTV footage, we will have an idea about the rush of traffic on different routes and accordingly decide if there is a need to divert vehicles,” D’Souza said.
He said through the cameras police will be able to cover the entry and exit points of the town while signages will help in bringing discipline among motorists.
