the goan I networkrPONDAr rThe Goa government abolished entry tax on the state borders as a fallout of the introduction of Goods and Service Tax (GST). The entry tax was much criticised and agitations were witnessed in the neighbouring states following its implementation. rVehicles entering from Karnataka and Maharashtra were affected with the entry tax which was imposed since 2013. rNagraj Naidu, secretary of Ponda Goods Transport Association (Goa), told The Goan said they had frequently requested the state government to abolish the entry tax as they were facing losses. r“The entry tax had given us pain. We had to unnecessarily spend money to enter Goa. I thank the government for abolishing this tax,” Naidu said. rIt may be recalled that this entry tax had also invited controversy after some staff deployed at the toll booths were accused of irregularities in the entry tax receipts, leading to the removal of some staff.
Transport operators welcome axe on entry tax
The toll booth near the Mollem check post was thrown open to all traffic after the government withdrew the entry tax to inter-state vehicles on Saturday. The transport operators have welcomed the government’s move.
