Margao fire brigade personnel rushed to Sirlim village after waste from a truck, believed to be residue of synthetic resin, spilled on the National Highway 66 on Thursday evening.
The truck had reportedly collected the waste from an unit located at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate and was heading to Verna-Sancoale area for disposal.
The waste spillage occurred near the rumbler sticks installed by the National Highway authorities, causing slippery road condition.
Fire Officer Gill D’Sa informed that the waste which spilled on the National Highway was a residue of synthetic resin which was reportedly being transported from the Cuncolim Industrial Estate to the Verna-Sancoale area. “We tried to flush out the waste, but in vain. The owner was later told to requisition a chemical to remove the waste, which had caused slippery conditions,” he said.
Local residents have questioned the transportation of such risky waste in a haphazard manner and have demanded action against the truck owner. They have also demanded to know whether the truck had all the requisite permissions from the concerned authorities for the transportation of the waste from Cuncolim.
