A truck driver escaped with minor abrasions after a truck carrying paper bundles from a paper mill in Dandeli split into two following a major accident on the newly constructed Belagavi-Goa NH748 early on Wednesday. The impact was so severe that the truck broke into two sections, separating the engine and cabin from the rear portion loaded with paper bundles.
According to police, the truck was transporting paper bundles from Dandeli to Delhi when the accident occurred on a bridge near the old Kuptagiri road in Khanapur. The driver reportedly dozed off at the wheel, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the bridge’s side railing, splitting the truck apart. The impact scattered paper bundles across a stretch of approximately 400 to 500 metres along the highway. After the driver alerted the Ganebail toll plaza, Khanapur police rushed to the spot and initiated the necessary procedures. A morning walker had also noticed the accident and informed the police.
Despite the extensive damage to the truck, the driver escaped with minor abrasions. No loss of life was reported.
