Acting on a tip-off about the illegal transportation of cattle to Goa, police seized a truck carrying six bullocks and arrested two persons including a Goa resident. The truck carrying bullocks was intercepted near Ramnagar late Monday evening and it was found that six bullocks were being transported to a slaughter house in Goa. The cost of the bullocks was estimated at Rs 3 lakh.
Giving details about the seizure, Ramnagar PSI Chandrashekhar Harer told The Goan that some activists had tipped the police about the illegal transportation of the bullocks to Goa. Accordingly, a truck was intercepted near Ramnagar at about 6 pm.
“The transporter had concealed the bullocks behind wooden planks. Truck driver Mahadev Masannavar (32) of Ramdurg in Belagavi district and Aslam Bepari (50) from Margao were taken into custody. The truck (GA-08-V-0901) was also seized. A case was registered at Ramanagar Police station.
Wary about the illegal transportation of cattle via Ramnagar, the activists have complained that though there is ban on trading and illegal transportation by the Center, cows and bullocks are transported to Goa in large numbers.
“Many vehicles proceeding from Gokak, Ramdurg and other talukas of Belagavi district are transporting to Goa via Ramnagar every Thursday,” an activist said.
Meanwhile, confusion prevails in the police department about the Centre’s ban on sale and slaughter of cows.
Reacting to the Centre’s ban on slaughter and sale of cows, Karnataka Chief Minister had said the state has not received any such notices so far. “Karnataka has not received any order or circular with regard to banning cow slaughter and sale. We will look into the matter and only then will be able to decide,” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had stated.
