Goa Forward Party (GFP) leaders Meshu D’Costa and Dattaraj Raut Dessai were reportedly detained by Sanguem Police on Wednesday after they appeared at the police station along with their advocate for inquiry in connection with an alleged altercation involving police personnel.
The arrest follows a recent confrontation at the Sanguem Police Station involving D’Costa, Raut Dessai and others, including their advocate.
The case pertains to allegations of threats, obstruction and improper conduct towards police personnel while they were discharging their official duties.
The development comes against the backdrop of an FIR registered against D’Costa after he allegedly put a latch on the PWD office at Sanguem in protest over what he claimed was the failure of the department to provide satisfactory replies to repeated complaints regarding potholes on the Nondurlem Bridge.
D’Costa and Raut Dessai had earlier approached the South Goa Sessions Court seeking anticipatory bail. However, the court rejected their pleas, observing that there was a prima facie case of aggressive, confrontational and intimidating conduct.
Following the rejection of anticipatory bail, both leaders appeared before Sanguem Police along with their advocate. Police subsequently placed them under arrest.
Meanwhile, sources said GFP president Vijai Sardesai is expected to visit the Sanguem Police Station following the reported detention of two party leaders. Further investigation is underway.
