In a significant operation, two boats from Malpe, Karnataka, were apprehended for illegally fishing in Goan waters, specifically near Nerul.
The incident was a collaborative effort between local traditional fishermen and the coastal police, highlighting the growing concerns over illegal fishing practices in the region.
The operation unfolded when members of Goenche Raponkarancho Ekvot, spotted the boats engaging in unauthorized fishing activities.
Demonstrating a strong sense of responsibility towards their fishing grounds, the fishermen pursued the intruders and alerted the coastal police.
Upon receiving the call for assistance, the coastal police quickly mobilized, joining forces with the local fishermen to intercept the boats.
The operation culminated in the successful seizure of both vessels, which were then brought to the Panaji jetty.
During the operation, authorities recovered a substantial catch of fish valued in the lakhs, further emphasizing the financial stakes involved in the ongoing issue of illegal fishing.
Local fishermen expressed relief and satisfaction with the outcome, viewing it as a victory for the traditional fishing community. “We take pride in our waters and our livelihoods. It is crucial for us to protect our fishing grounds from illegal activities that threaten our way of life and the marine ecosystem,” a representative from Goenche Raponkarancho Ekvot said.
The coastal police have announced that cases will be filed against the owners of the seized boats, sending a clear message that illegal fishing will not be tolerated in Goa’s waters.
