One roadside stall in Valpoi sells lanterns, masks and other festive items ahead of Diwali.
VALPOI
The heavy rains in Sattari have not dampened the festive fervour, with the markets in Valpoi and Honda decorated ahead of Diwali.
While the youth have been busy at work to give final touches to Narkasur effigies, people have been visiting the markets to make festive purchases and decorate their homes.
While various types of attractive Akash kandils are available for sale in the market at Valpoi, there has been a focus on locally made lanterns, with artistes from various villages preparing lanterns and putting them up for sale.
With the emphasis on locally made lanterns and other products, the demand for products made in China has dropped significantly.
“This year, there has been a drop in items made in China and people are paying special attention to buying lanterns made by local artisans,” said a shopkeeper.
There has also been a growing demand to buy earthen diyas.
The Kumbhar community in the area usually manufactures these lamps in large quantities and makes them available for sale in the Valpoi market.
Traditional sweets are also in big demand and a number of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Sattari taluka have been selling traditional sweets.
Narkasur effigies of various shapes and sizes have been made in various parts of Sattari and will be set ablaze in the wee hours of Monday.
